A summers evening in 2004 was a very historic day in the history of Westmeath GAA.Westmeath never won anything at senior level prior to 2004. They did win the 1995 minor All Ireland and the u21 All Ireland in 1999.
Westmeath went threw tough and difficult times for players, supporters and management threw bad loosing streaks and getting hammering’s from teams.
The late Páidí Ó Sé then joined Westmeath along with Tomas O Flatharta. This was a turning point for football in Westmeath. They started managing Westmeath in October 2003. Just one week after Paidi was sacked as Kerry Boss.
The whole county got a lift when they came on board there was a sense of hope and excitement threw out the county. They didn’t get off to the best of starts unfortunately Westmeath only won one league match that year but it was enough to stop them getting relegated

I still remember running onto the pitch when the final whistle blew. Croke park was swarmed by a sea of maroon. People were taking snips of grass from the pitch to bring home! The whole county erupted. The crowds that gathered in Mullingar that evening was huge it was if as Westmeath won the All Ireland.
Westmeath footballers Rory O’Connell, John Keane, Gary Connaughton and Dessie Dolan all won All Stars in 200.
